Karina knows that she has to look after herself, that she can't always fix what's broken. But when Austin's behavior worsens and her father's reactions grow more extreme, Karina feels her own edges beginning to fray. That's when she meets him--a closed book she's desperate to open.
At just twenty, Kale is a handsome, brooding soldier struggling with the aftermath of two tours in Afghanistan. He's emotionally damaged and closed off. Quiet doesn't begin to describe him. But as Karina gets used to his stable presence, she finds it hard to ignore the way he makes her feel. In their time together, she finds the stillness she has always wanted and never found. She lets down her guard. And she lets herself fill in the blanks about this mysterious man.
But illusions quickly made are quickly shattered. That's when Karina has to find her own courage--to untangle the truth from the lies, and decide what she's going to do about it.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I was happy to discover the author in a New Adult book. Unlike After, here the characters are much more mature, and you won’t find all the “I love you, I don’t love you, I love you, etc….” that I really didn’t like in the After series. I think that’s not only the age of the characters that bring this more mature atmosphere, it’s also the military context in which the characters evolve. Some of them have lived some brutal events, and others didn’t had a smooth childhood.
In this book, we follow Karina a independent woman that despite all her insecurities, wants to prove to her family that she can live alone. It’s really easy to feels connected with her, and I was feeling very close to her in the book. Then there is Kael, a mysterious man with many secrets. What I like when he arrives in Karina’s life, is that at first she doesn’t think about how beautiful he is. For once, the female character doesn’t focus on the appearance of the man ! On the contrary, the first thing she thinks about is how he doesn’t speak a lot, as if he were shy. There is a chemistry between the two characters, but I like that Kael keep some mysteries for himself and stay unpredictable.
The first part of the book was very good, but then, I had some difficulties to read it and to keep being interested by it. First, I think that the chapters are too smaller. For example, the first party Kael and Karina attends together seems to last three quarters of the book and because there is at least ten chapters for this party. I was cut in my reading by the end of each chapters, because for me a chapter ends an action or an event, but it wasn’t the case here. On the other hand, some events were too quick. For instance, the reader didn’t witness some major events in the relation between Kael and Karina, we just had one or two sentenced to summarize it for us. The romance two was a little bit quick. I would have love to see some difficulties at the start of their relation, but even if they knew each other for four days, they fall in each other arms without doubts. Fortunately, the difficulties comes at the end of the book, with a little twist.
To finish, it was a good read, but the negative points keep it from being a great read.
