Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.
Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou's, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.
The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou's most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.
And love makes fools of us all.
Do you like good and bad witches ? Do you fancy difficult romance ? If you do, then this book is made for you, just as he was for me !
In this fantasy novel, two castes are in war. On one side, the witches born with their power, are hiding themselves to survivre. On the other hand, the Chasseur, raised by the Church to find and burn the witches that pose a threat to the realm and the kind. In this established war, Reid and Louise are in the opposite side… and they will have to learn to live with each other. Indeed, they will become husband and wife against their will.
Louise is a witch that left a coven years ago, and that survive by stealing. Reid is a Chasseur that has been raised by the Church and is very dedicated to his mission. I love the fact that compared to most of the books, the role are reverse in this couple. Reid is the prude one, shocked by the behaviour of her wife, while Louise is the one that cuss and live outisde of the society rules. The fact that they will have to learn to live with each other while not wanting it, give us some funny scenes to read.
The prejudices about the other side are strong for both of them, but what they will learn during the novel will make they change their mind. It will be harder for Reid because his convictions are carves deep in him. I like the way the author give us only small elements about the general story during her book. She doesn’t say too much, but enough to keep us entertained during our read. The novel is ponctuated by action, but the author also give us some time to take our breath with scene between Louise and Reid. I love that their romance is complicated and wasn’t love at first sight, but I also like to see their feeling grown up for each other, each in their own way.
To finish, I like the magical system of the witched, and the fact that the author give us both type of witches. I am looking forward to discover the other one in the second book of the serie.
