Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.
Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.
So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.
Winner takes the loser’s heart.
Literally.
It's been some time since I read a rewrite, but this Snow White rewrite intriged me from the start. Yes it's difficult to see every aspect of the Snow White tale in this book, but that's what's good. The author create her own world and some beautiful and complex characters.
Zera is the most complex of all, because she always have this internal struggle between her beast part, and her human part. I really liked to see her change during the story. At first, she is really hard with herself, and we understand that the judgmental look of other people never help her to think better of herself. Then her human part start to really show and she become a lady in the world of human that despise her, but has nobody know what she is, she starts to blend in the crowd. What I really like about her, is the fact that she is neither a badass nor a weeping girl. She's in between and that really balance her character.
Lucien is also an interesting character. We never know how he is going to react to a situation and we're always on edge when he appears in a chapter. It's something that I'm found of in male characters !
The love romance is slow and complicated and is mixed with politics games played by all the characters Sara Wold introduced us with. The book is never boring and I read it in less than a week.
Finally, the end with its cliff hanger is so so crazy: I want the second book right now !!! The waiting is going to be unbearable !
